By Allyson Bird June 30, 2009 $9.2M just in time for destroyer Laffey After months of uncertainty, Patriots Point on Monday received the $9.2 million state loan it needs to repair its most weakened warship. The destroyer Laffey, dubbed "The Ship that Would Not Die" for fending off kamikaze attacks in World War II, heads to dry dock Aug. 19, thanks to Monday's vote by the state Budget and Control Board. The funding comes just in time to get the ship sea-ready by the summer's highest tide.
Patriots Point got a $9.2 million loan to make critical repairs on the destroyer Laffey, examined here by maintenance supervisor Paul Jeffers. The loan must be repaid within a year and a half. It also follows months of discussion as to whether Patriots Point, unable to pay for repairs, should turn the ship into an artificial reef. Officials at the attraction traveled to Washington and Columbia seeking support. They later learned that sinking the ship would cost about the same as saving it. |

2009 REUNION - AUCTION ANNOUNCEMENT Our Auction has become a great Fund Raiser for the Association over the years. The efforts of the Sharkey family for many of those years made the Auction a fun, successful event. This year we’re going to add a new twist – we’ll have our standard Silent Auction, plus a “Live” Auction. Yes, an Auctioneer will join us to help keep things moving. This years Reunion Registration Packet will contain an “Auction Item Description” form for the item or items you wish to donate. The form will help us prepare in advance for the Auction as well as select the 15-20 items that will go into the Live Auction. All remaining donated items will be entered in the Silent Auction. As in past years the items can be Yorktown or Navy memorabilia, gift baskets or gift cards, antiques, books, crafts, jewelry, etc. Last year we had over 150 items and raised almost $2,000 for the Association – thank you. We hope to break that number this year with your support. So mark your calendar - USS Yorktown CV-10 Association Reunion, October 8-10, 2009 and start thinking about what you can donate to the Auction. PS: if you can’t make the Auction, which we hope is not the case, and wish to donate an item, please call the Shipboard Director to discuss. Ron Meacham Fund Raising Chairman |
