Mark your calendars for the next annual USS Yorktown Association Reunion to be held September 30 and October 1, 2 in Mt. Pleasant, Patriots Point, S.C. We look forward to seeing you there. Bring family and friends and get acquainted/reacquainted with your shipmates from the past. Registration will begin at 0900 on September 30 at the Hampton Inn. This year the Reunion dinner will be held on Thursday evening instead of Saturday evening as in the past. Friday's activities include the Membership meeting at 1000 and the Memorial Service at 1030. We will again have a lunch in Hanger Bay #3 at 1200 on Friday, which will include the Silent and Live Auction. Also, on Friday is an optional Charleston tour available at 1500. Saturday will begin with the Meet & Greet at 1000 aboard ship. Also, at 1000 an optional trip will be leaving to tour Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan Island and a tour of Charleston. The Reunion will close Saturday evening with the Patriotic Days party, including heavy hors d' oeuvres, cash bar and recorded music. Updated 01:15 p.m., August 23, 2010 Less than a year after becoming permanent executive director at cash-strapped attraction Patriots Point, Dick Trammell offered his resignation Friday. In a letter to Patriots Point Development Authority chairman John Hagerty, Trammell said he intends to stay on the job through year's end and offered to transition to his previous position of tourism and business development director after that.Trammell took over as interim executive director when retired Army Brigadier Gen. Hugh Tant III resigned in April 2009. At the time Patriots Point faced millions of dollars in repairs to its warships — including the famed destroyer Laffey, riddled with holes and posing an environmental threat to Charleston Harbor. The museum received a $9.2 million state loan under Trammell, yet it failed to receive federal grant money it banked on for repaying the state funds. Patriots Point also recently unveiled the preliminary concept for a master plan to redevelop nearly 400 acres of waterfront land. Trammell became permanent executive director in September, earning about $100,000 per year. |

Published Aug. 17, 2010 After nine months of planning, consultants for Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum today unveiled a vision for developing as a mixed-use community the roughly 360 acres surrounding the historic ships. The master plan calls for 2,000 to 3,000 residential units, a waterfront hotel that’s more upscale than those now in Mount Pleasant, office development, retail space in a “town center” style, parking garages, public access to the waterfront, and a gridded street network. The idea behind the plan, presented by a team of planners led by AECOM, is to sell and lease portions of the land surrounding the museum in a way that will generate significantly more revenue for the Patriots Point Development Authority.The authority, which the state created in the 1970s to run the floating ship museum and manage the surrounding land using self-generated funds, is facing a financial crisis.  The crisis is so severe that at today’s board meeting, some members suggested getting rid of the USS Laffey, a destroyer ship that the authority last year borrowed $9.2 million from the state to repair and save. Now that the Laffey is fixed, Patriots Point can’t afford to pay back the loan because an expected federal appropriation hasn’t materialized. Patriots Point also is struggling with the costs of bringing the ship safely back to the waterfront museum. |

Shipmates,
At the April 11 Board of Directors meeting a lengthy discussion was held on our budget and annual operating expenses. Realizing that we were not meeting our budget the board approved a rate increase as well as adding two more level of membership. New rates are:
Annual Crew member rate: $50.00
Annual Associate rate: $50.00
Annual Crew member Family rate: $75.00
Annual Associate Family rate: $75.00
Crew member Lifetime rate: $500.00
Associate Lifetime rate: $500.00
Crew member, Associate Member, Crew member lifetime, and Associate Lifetime rate allows unlimited access to the ship for the individual member and spouse. Crew member family rate and Associate Family rate allows unlimited access to the ship for the member, spouse, and children under the age of 18 years.
